Belief System
The religion in Ancient Ghana mixed supernatural and spiritual powers. They believed that all living things had spirits that co-
existed. Ancient Ghana's people believed that if they displeased their ancestors by not sacrificing that they would have bad luck.
Every time something bad happened they would offer sacrifices to their ancestors. Ghanaians at the time believed that their
ancestors were a median to the gods.
In the 9th century Islam was brought into Ancient Ghana. It was brought by Muslims who came to Ghana to trade. Many of the
Ghanaians started to practice Islam. In 1076 a group of Muslims called Almoravid's conquered Ghana. Then they attempted to
force Islam onto the people but failed. Later on in the 15th century Christian missionaries from Portugal arrived. But until that
point Ghana consisted of only Islam and traditional Ghanaian religion. Modern Ghana is 71% Christian 17% Islamic.
